Hobson’s legacy is the real issue

RE: “Earmarks issue can distort Hobson’s image at the end,” Dayton Daily News, July 10, 2008: I can’t understand why Martin Gottlieb is concerned with Dave Hobson’s “image.” Mr. Hobson has his name on enough buildings, street signs and budget-busting spending bills to embellish his image for the rest of the Century. You would think “how earmarks affect the legacy Mr. Hobson leaves future generations” would be something more substantial to address.

The simple truth is that since Mr. Hobson was elected to Congress in 1990, the national debt has increased from less than $4 trillion to $9.4 trillion, and continues to rise $1 billion each day. The interest alone on that debt amounts to more than $1.2 billion per day! Furthermore, since 1990, counting future liabilities such as Medicare and Social Security, the total national debt has increased $42 trillion!

During his nine terms in Congress, Dave Hobson has accumulated personal wealth that could exceed $10 million dollars, but Mr. Hobson has steadfastly followed the Golden Rule of Campaign Financing, i.e., “Never contribute your own money to yours or anyone else’s political campaign.” Instead, Congressman Hobson has relied on earmarks, cronyism, patronage jobs for his “good old boy (and girl) network” and special favors to special interests as a means to finance his campaigns.

To be sure, image has everything to do with perception, and in politics perceptions are invariably contrived and manipulated. So in that context, I suppose Dave Hobson’s perceived image is safe, at least until our children and grandchildren wake up and get a whiff of the stench that is destroying their future.
