First, allow me to express a broad vision of what I believe to be the purpose of government. James Madison said, "If men were angels, they would not need government." Although I believe there are angels among us, I don't know of any elected officials who qualify, and if I am elected, I certainly wouldn’t, but electing honest public servants who uphold their oath of office would be a positive first step. On the other hand, Lord Acton said, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." I believe our local, state and federal governments are more and more drifting away from Madison 's view of the ideal political economy toward Lord Acton's observation. In any case, my point is that government has a purpose, and that purpose lies somewhere very close to Madison ’s view of the political economy. To be more specific, I believe a government that governs least, governs best, which is also the bedrock foundation of the true Republican Party.
